We have fairly temperate weather in the San Mateo area, so it’s easy to keep plants in containers outside all year around. But container plants are very susceptible to pests and disease even during the dormant winter months.
Among the many events in San Mateo coming up, Master Gardner Clinic on March 1 is where you can get all your questions answered by certified University of California Cooperative Extension volunteers.
From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., these master gardeners will be available at the Kohl Pump House in San Mateo Central Park to answer questions on all kinds of gardening topics.
Whether you’ve always wanted to start a container garden or have a full fledged jungle on your patio, you will benefit from the wise counsel of these knowledgeable volunteers.
If you’re having a problem with one or more of your container plants, bring in a sample of the plant, soil, or pest in a plastic bag and one of the master gardeners will identify the problem and suggest solutions. Not many events in San Mateo can boast this kind of service!

If you ever find yourself with free time on your hands and no ideas what to do, why not put that time to good use by volunteering around San Mateo?
There are plenty of volunteering opportunities near your San Mateo apartment, including becoming a nature volunteer serving local schools.
Nature volunteers support children in learning about, as well as developing love for science and nature. They work with small groups of children, both in the classroom and on the field, to discover more about the world in which they live. Learning is hands-on and allows children to get closer to the nature that is around them every day.
To become a volunteer, you need to be at least 18 years old, willing to complete a short training course that is run one day a week, and pay a small fee.
Once training is complete, you can give as little as four hours a month to the project. All volunteering takes place during the week, with details and new opportunities regularly updated on the volunteer site.

The City of San Mateo has just made it even easier to jump on the health and fitness bandwagon in the New Year with a pilot program offered at two of the many recreational centers around the city.
It’s called the Fitness Flex Program, and it’s offered at Beresford and the Senior Center. It involves buying a Fitness Flex Pass in San Mateo for either 5, 10, or 20 classes, the purchase of which allows you entrance into any class offered at either center.
The Beresford center has 14 classes to choose from, including Zumba Gold, Yoga Fusion, Fusion Power Cardio, and Classic Cardio Dance, among others.
Pay a flat fee of $45/5, $75/10, or $140/20 classes, and just walk into whichever class fits your schedule.

Sole Ristorante Italiano isn’t like your typical pizza restaurants in San Mateo. For one thing, this restaurant doesn’t serve pizza.
For another, it’s owned by renowned chef Mario Di Paola, former co-owner of Sapore Italiano in Burlingame.
At Sole Ristorante Italiano, fresh and organic is king. Everything is made in-house per order, so each flavorful dish comes out beautifully plated and perfectly proportioned.
Come for lunch or dinner, but be sure to try at least one pasta dish and save room for one of the mouthwatering desserts.
All of the egg pastas are homemade and melt seductively on the tongue. The pappardelle, tagliolini, linguine, and ravioli served with shellfish and organic greens in a cream, white wine, or meat sauce will transport you to a sunny cafe in Capri with one bite.
Few restaurants in San Mateo bother making Zabaglione fresh nightly, but this one does. The daily Sorbetto is a light palate cleanser sure to please.
Call 650-341-5555 to make a reservation, then head down El Camino Real to 37th Avenue for an amazing meal. Share your opinion of this restaurant on our Facebook page.
