Make note of the following mistakes to avoid while you’re on the treadmill.

  • Don’t skip your warm-up. Start on the treadmill by walking, and gradually increase your pace over the next 5 or 10 minutes to a jog. Do a mile before really picking up the speed.
  • Don’t ignore the incline option on the treadmill. Running at a one to two percent incline can give your body a more challenging workout.
  • Do not hold on to the sides of the treadmill. Doing so can mess up your gait and your posture.
  • Don’t over-think your stride. Often, your legs will figure your stride out on their own.
  • Do not run solely on the front part of the treadmill belt. Utilize the entire belt when running. Running at the front part only can restrict your range of motion.
