There are plenty of volunteering opportunities near your San Mateo apartment, including becoming a nature volunteer serving local schools.

Nature volunteers support children in learning about, as well as developing love for science and nature. They work with small groups of children, both in the classroom and on the field, to discover more about the world in which they live. Learning is hands-on and allows children to get closer to the nature that is around them every day.

To become a volunteer, you need to be at least 18 years old, willing to complete a short training course that is run one day a week, and pay a small fee.

Once training is complete, you can give as little as four hours a month to the project. All volunteering takes place during the week, with details and new opportunities regularly updated on the volunteer site.

Green Your San Mateo Bathroom with Eco-Friendly Bamboo Products

January 29th, 2015

If you’re renting one of our luxury green apartments in San Mateo, choosing eco-friendly bathroom decor and accessories is a no-brainer.

One type of material that will give your bathroom the feel of a spa is bamboo, and all types of products are made with it. While touted as an eco-friendly material, bamboo does have its detractors.

As an educated consumer, you can be sure the bamboo products you buy don’t have a detrimental environmental impact by buying only sustainably-sourced products.

Creating fabrics from bamboo fibers requires a lengthy, chemical heavy process, but it’s still not as bad as non-organic cotton processing.

Floor mats, vanity accessories, wastebaskets, towel racks, drawer organizers, and shelves that use bamboo harvested from sustainable farms is a viable green way to decorate your bathroom, even though most products are still produced overseas.

There are a few US sources that are making bamboo toilet paper, paper towels, and other products using a thermo-mechanical process rather than chemical, which is an even better solution for our luxury green apartments in San Mateo.

Our community is LEED Gold-designated and offers a full range of eco-friendly amenities. Contact us today for more information or to schedule a tour.

January 27th, 2015

The City of San Mateo has just made it even easier to jump on the health and fitness bandwagon in the New Year with a pilot program offered at two of the many recreational centers around the city.

It’s called the Fitness Flex Program, and it’s offered at Beresford and the Senior Center. It involves buying a Fitness Flex Pass in San Mateo for either 5, 10, or 20 classes, the purchase of which allows you entrance into any class offered at either center.

But if your kitchen is overstocked following the holiday season, here are three apartment organization tips for guidance:

  • Pot racks and pegboards get the clutter off the counters and onto usable space that’s often ignored. Surf Craigslist for used pot racks, or build one yourself with an old bicycle wheel and standard hooks found at most hardware stores. Hang a nifty pegboard on the hallway wall to hold recipes, to-do lists, phone numbers, notes, photos, etc.
  • Separate the kitchen area from the living space, and increase the countertop work area in your kitchen with a wheeled kitchen cart. This can hold a toaster oven and cookbooks or a cutting board and dishware.
  • Adding hanging shelves to the wall leading into your kitchen area or to the wall opposite your kitchen island is a great way to increase storage space and make your living area more interesting.

These apartment organization tips will make entertaining and daily cooking chores a pleasure in our luxury green apartments in San Mateo. For more information about joining our community, contact us today.

Learning bike maintenance, repairs, and road safety tips in a biking 101 class is also a good idea. For example, here’s a simple way to reattach a bike chain that’s fallen off.

  • Your bike isn’t broken if the chain comes off the front chain ring or rear cogset, but it will require you to fully stop and get your hands a bit dirty reattaching the chain.
  • You can use your finger or a small stick to gently pull the chain back onto the closest groove in the rear nearest the frame.
  • Then lift the rear wheel up off the ground and peddle backward to realign the chain on the cogset.
  • Finally, go through the gears peddling forward to make sure the chain goes through each gear properly, and you’re off!
